These resources provide job hiring opportunity as well as training and certifications and the ability for you to see how your current military experience and skills translate to civilian job skills.
Veteran Readiness & Employment (VR&E):
If you’re a service member or Veteran and have a disability that was caused—or made worse—by your active-duty service and that limits your ability to work or prevents you from working, you may be able to get employment support or services to help you live as independently as possible. To be eligible for this service you must be honorably discharged and have a 10% or higher disability rating. If you were discharged before January 1, 2013, you have 12 years from that date to apply for the service. If you were discharged after January 1, 2013, there is no limit on when you can apply.
Also, as a Veteran, you’re protected under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA). This means you can’t be disadvantaged in your civilian career because of your military service. For example, if you were deployed you employer is required to hold your position for you until you return.
Hiring Preference:
Veteran’s Preference are points (5 or 10) that a veteran is given when applying for federal government jobs that enable them to qualify above other applicants. Veterans’ preference applies to all new appointments in the competitive service and many in the excepted service. Only veterans discharged or released from active duty in the armed forces under honorable conditions (honorable or general discharge) are eligible for veterans’ preference. If you are a “retired member of the armed forces” you are not included in the definition of preference eligible unless you are a disabled veteran OR you retired below the rank of major or its equivalent. There are basically three types of preference eligibility, sole survivorship (0 point preference eligible), non-disabled (5 point preference eligible) and disabled (10 point preference eligible).
